What will you do? Make an impact!
As a Laboratory Chemist you will be responsible for the timely and accurate analysis and interpretation of various hazardous water-based waste and process samples in our Gwent Waste Management Centre’s laboratory in Newport, providing a valuable service for both internal and external customers. The ideal candidate will bring a keen eye for detail while being pragmatic in problem solving and demonstrate a strong ability to work flexibly in a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Work safely at all times, demonstrating a commitment to Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) standards, confidently challenging anything that looks wrong
- Take a sample from the beginning of its journey to its end, from receipt and booking through its analysis, reporting and disposal
- Accurately record and maintain traceable records physically and digitally using various systems
- Promptly escalate and investigate non-conforming materials, unexpected analytical results or quality concerns
- Maintain laboratory equipment and calibrations in line with local SOPs and manufacturer guidance
- Plan and prioritise your own workload while providing support to colleagues and adapting to changing business priorities
- Maintain housekeeping standards and contribute to related improvement initiatives
- Contribute to laboratory projects, continuous improvement initiatives and wider business activities as required
- Handle business, customer and technical information with professionalism and confidentiality
- Undertake other reasonable duties to support the laboratory and wider business
Analytical Techniques
You will gain experience using a variety of analytical techniques, including but not limited to:
- ICP-OES
- IC
- UHPLC-HRAMS
- AOX Analyser
- Steam Distillation
- Titration
- Spectrophotometry
- Flash Point Analysis
Do you have what it takes?
Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- BSc in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline, or equivalent relevant experience
- Strong awareness of laboratory safety and chemical hazards
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail
- Competent in Microsoft Office and general IT systems
- A professional, flexible and team-focused approach
Desireable
- Experience of laboratory analysis within environmental, waste or water sectors
- Knowledge of the Waste Framework Directive or hazardous waste legislation
- Prior use of SAP for data entry
