Lead Diesel Mechanic

The Lead Diesel Mechanic is responsible for overseeing daily shop operations while performing advanced diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and complex repairs on trucks, trailers, tankers, and other commercial equipment. This role serves as the technical expert and team leader, ensuring work quality, safety compliance, and operational efficiency across the fleet.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Leadership & People Development

  • Leads, coaches, and develops Diesel Mechanics to build a high-performing, engaged team
  • Provides hands-on training, mentorship, and continuous feedback to improve technical skills
  • Fosters an inclusive, collaborative work environment built on trust and accountability
  • Identifies skill gaps and supports employee development and cross-training
  • Models company values and set the standard for performance and behavior

 

Safety & Compliance Excellence

  • Champions a safety-first culture and ensures strict adherence to EHS policies and procedures
  • Ensures compliance with DOT, FHWA inspection standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Proactively identifies and mitigates safety risks within the shop and fleet operations
  • Leads by example in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment
  • Holds team accountable for safe work practices and regulatory compliance

 

Operational Execution & Results Delivery

  • Ensures timely, high-quality completion of maintenance and repair activities
  • Prioritizes and assigns work to optimize fleet uptime and operational efficiency
  • Oversees preventive maintenance schedules to reduce downtime and repair costs
  • Monitors performance metrics (e.g., turnaround time, equipment reliability)
  • Demonstrates urgency, ownership, and accountability for outcomes

 

Technical Expertise & Problem Solving

  • Serves as the subject matter expert in diagnostics, repair, and maintenance of diesel equipment
  • Leads complex troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
  • Utilizes diagnostic technology and tools to identify and resolve issues efficiently
  • Applies critical thinking and data-driven decision making to solve problems
  • Continuously improves technical knowledge and stays current with industry practices

 

Continuous Improvement & Change Agility

  • Identifies opportunities to improve shop processes, efficiency, and cost control
  • Supports and drives process improvement initiatives and standardization
  • Embraces change and helps team adapt to new tools, systems, and processes
  • Challenges inefficiencies and contributes ideas for innovation and optimization
  • Demonstrates flexibility in a fast-paced, evolving operational environment
  • Utilize computers for diagnostics, and various computer software systems
  • Accurately complete all task related paperwork
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned

Do you have what it takes?

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ year of experience with heavy duty trucks and equipment
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Must have your own tools
  • Certifications in brakes, A/C, and wheel seals are a plus; hydraulic systems experience preferred.
  • ASE certification desirable, not mandatory
  • Knowledge of the DOT regulations
  • Physically able to lift 60lbs
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft suite products
  • Able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check
  • Ability to work the schedule for which you are hired for
  • Ability to work on-site as described in the job description
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English
