Health and Safety Specialist

We are looking for a proactive, hands-on Health & Safety Specialist to champion a strong safety culture within our industrial operations in East Chicago, IN. This role is deeply embedded in daily plant activities, requiring a visible and engaged presence to implement safety policies, training, and compliance initiatives for a workforce of over 160 employees.

As a boots-on-the-ground specialist, you will collaborate closely with Operations teams to drive safety awareness, mitigate risks, and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential to influence and engage employees at all levels, fostering a workplace where safety is a top priority.

Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, this position will build strong partnerships with internal teams and external stakeholders, including auditors, contractors, vendors, and regulatory agencies.

What Will You Do?

Safety Policies & Programs: 

• Promote a strong safety culture by actively participating in safety meetings, training, and daily workplace activities. 
• Ensure safety policies and procedures are followed, review emergency response plans, and identify ways to reduce risks.

Training & Education: 

• Lead safety training on workplace hazards, emergency procedures, and proper use of protective gear. 
• Manage training for new hires and ongoing refresher courses like HAZWOPER and contractor safety programs.

Equipment & PPE Management: 

• Work with Operations to ensure employees have the right protective gear and that safety equipment is properly maintained and used correctly.

Inspections & Emergency Preparedness: 

• Regularly check the workplace for hazards, enforce safety rules, and address potential risks. 
• Help create and update emergency response plans, and conduct drills to prepare employees for emergencies.

Record Keeping & Reporting: 

• Keep accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training in the EHS reporting system (KPA).

Operations Support & Continuous Improvement: 

• Work closely with Operations teams to make safety a part of everyday work. 
• Identify areas for improvement and put new safety measures in place to prevent accidents.

Safety Communication & Committees: 

• Keep employees, leaders, and external agencies informed and engaged in safety efforts. 
• Support safety committees and provide guidance to team members responsible for compliance and training.

Qualifications

Education: BS/BA and a professional certification relating to Health and Safety is preferred. 

Experience: Candidates must have proven experience in Health and Safety with a minimum of 1 year of experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment

Skills: 

• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
• Attention to detail, with keen observation and investigation skills.
• Ability to partner with all Operations teams.
• Forklift operation experience is a plus.

Other Requirements: Ability to remain on foot for the entire work shift.

Work Environment

On-site plant position with some office work. No hybrid option available.

What Does the Interview Process Look Like

• Next, candidates will be scheduled for a one hour in-person interview with the Health & Safety Manager, the Plant Manager, and the HRBP for the East Chicago facility.
• Finally, candidates will be scheduled for a Teams interview with Director of Health and Safety, and the H&S HR Manager.
